And there I was, thinking that thinking of something to blog about today would be difficult, this being the last post of the challenge and all. Boy, was I wrong. #Brexit kind of made that one a no-brainer. My thoughts about the #Brexit and the reactions to it:
Personally I think that everyone who voted for the #Brexit is a complete and utter moron. Sure, the EU is a highly annoying, deeply beaureaucratic moloch. But we all made that moloch as important and significant as it is today. The times when any one country alone could stand for itself and survive are quite gone. Pretty much anyone in the – geographically speaking – EU needs to be either part of the EU or adapt their own laws and regulations so much that they could easily just BE part of the EU if they want to trade with anyone else in this geographical region. The time when you could leave the EU as a country and be able to survive on your own is long gone. That could have maybe still worked 30-40 years ago when the EU wasn’t even really called EU yet. But now? After decades of nicely massaging this moloch deeply into the whole fabric which is the trade relations within the continent of Europe and the rest of the world it’s near impossible to get rid of it and NOT suffer.
I don’t quite get the pessimists though who now see the destruction of all mankind upon us. It’s not exactly the UK who kept the EU together all this time. That is due to inertia, nothing more, nothing less. It’s not even Germany keeping the EU alive and kicking even though Germany for quite a while surely was one of the most important if not the most important financial and integral pillar of this moloch EU.
So, what’s going to happen now? I don’t know. With Cameron gone the prospects are less than favourable, after all, they do have that saying where “nothing better will follow”. And in light of the possibility of someone like Farage or Johnston following Cameron I’d rather see the queen take over 🙂 One thing is for sure: Scotland will have its go again at another try to leave the UK and then probably jump right back into the arms of the EU. Ireland might just be tempted to do the same, I guess. A grim future lies ahead of England and Wales then, making England die an old and lonely lady in the end.
This decision pro #Brexit was not a good one and in the long run will throw the UK in a downwards spiral. Not only will they still have to abide by EU regulations if they want to trade with EU countries but also the protective arms of the EU will then no longer be shielding them from any harm. Just look at how often Greece was kept up by the EU. Look at how Portugal and Spain received funds and support. There are advantages to being inside this moloch, after all. They’re not there anymore though if you leave. Out means out.
Interesting times lie ahead of us. It’s going to be interesting to see the results and consequences pile up now. Just thinking of all the Brits living and working abroad now who all of a sudden will need Visa.
And that concludes Emy’s challenge, #OneWeekDailyBlogging. It was surprisingly fun. Not sure I’ll keep it up, let’s see what future holds in store for us 🙂
